Thursday 28 March 2024 - Week 9 - Term 1
Tēnā tātou e te whānau,
We are entering my favourite season of the year - Autumn, where the mornings and nights are cool but the days are warm and settled. I wish all of our new students and whānau to our school a warm welcome.
There is a lot on over the next month so keep connected with our Facebook page and we will let you know when things are coming up.
KIA HAKA - BULLY FREE NEW ZEALAND
As part of our learning to learn, we have all been focusing on what it takes to create a strong and inclusive learning environment. We have been using the Kia Kaha program for Kōwhai and Rimu team and Bully Free NZ for Kauri. We are working on a shared understanding of what bullying is and developing ways to successfully navigate when problems arise.
I am really proud to hear the difference this learning is making around the playground with the use of language. Ākonga are using the language of "rude" and "mean". I have also attached a PDF to support whānau at home.

ATTENDANCE
Regular school attendance is essential for academic progress and achievement. If your child is regularly attending school they are giving themselves the best opportunity to achieve their potential.
· 90% attendance means missing one day of school every fortnight, the equivalent of four school weeks in a year and half a school year if the pattern continues over five years of schooling.
80% attendance means missing one day of school every week, the equivalent of eight school weeks in a year and nearly a full school year if the pattern continues over five years of schooling.
· 70% attendance means missing one and a half days per week, the equivalent of 12 school weeks in a year and more than a full school year and a full term over five years of schooling.
RELAY FOR LIFE
We certainly picked a glorious weekend to participate in the Relay for Life. I am so grateful of all of the kaiako (staff), tauira (students) and whānau who supported us. It was an amazing community event and it felt really special to be a part of it. We've already started planning for the next one so watch this space.
EASTER TUESDAY - TUESDAY 2nd APRIL
The Tuesday following Easter Monday is a school holiday (but not a statutory holiday), meaning schools must not be open. Read more here on the Ministry Website.
SANDPIT WORK
Thanks to Kevin Aldridge, the first phase of the sandpit area will be done over the Easter Weekend. The old sandpit and surrounding area is going to be cleared and levelled in preparation for phase 2. This will mean that we will not have access to a sand pit for a little while... but it will be worth it!
Phase 2 - Purchasing of materials, growing grass in the surrounding area and finalising the plan.
Phase 3 - Building the sandpit
Phase 4 - Filling it with sand and opening the area for business.

THE PASSING OF EX WHĀNAU
There was some really sad news shared with me this week of a previous whānau of Winchester School - Rob Howard passed away suddenly on the weekend. The Howard whānau were part of the Winchester community from 2013 - 2018 and had a significant part to play in the artificial turf that is around the Kōwhai play area and pool area. Rob donated both of these turfed areas to our school.
We have had many years to enjoy these spaces which were previously quite muddy so we appreciate their thoughtful donation. We send our condolences and thoughts to his wife, Charlotte and children Lucy, Kate and Sammie.
MAREE WOODS
We wish Maree Woods a speedy recovery after her heart surgery. I went and visited her on Wednesday and delivered a hamper of goodies from the staff and some cards that the children had written for her. She is a trooper and is making steady recovery progress. We are all missing you and can't wait to see you back, Maree!
GRADUATION
We are really proud of Rachel, who has started her exciting career in teaching with Winchester School and Room 7 this year. Last week, she graduated and we as a community want to acknowledge this special occasion with her and her whānau. Ka nui te mihi ki a koe!

RIGHT CHOICE RECOGNITION DAY - MONDAY 8th APRIL
The tamariki have been working extremely hard with their behaviour, attitude and learning and have earned their right choice reward! The Rimu team are organising this Term's Right Choice Day - it's a "Dress up as a character" day and is heavily connected to stories, books and reading. There will also be a "book swap" in the afternoon where kids will bring a book from home that they no longer need or want to swap with another book. Finally there will be a live performance by some special guests in the afternoon.
END OF TERM ASSEMBLY - FRIDAY 12th APRIL
Due to Week 10 being a short week, we have changed the end of Term assembly from the 5th April to the 12th April. All welcome, 2:15pm.

LIFEWALK SERVICE - POU TAUTOKO
We are excited to partner with Lifewalk, an organisation providing support for school students. Lifewalk train Chaplains who can walk alongside students who need a little extra support, encouraging them to engage in all aspects of their school experience. When social/emotional competence is low, this can affect academic engagement.
In response to this, Lifewalk Chaplains provide individual support to students, offering them a listening ear – with empathy and compassion and without judgement.
Lifewalk Chaplains provide a safe environment for a child and encourage them to share what is going on for them, recognising that they are a valuable part of our world, and have much to offer. Chaplains are not trained counsellors, they are considered ‘friends of the school’ who simply make themselves available to spend time with children/young people. They are volunteers and their role is to listen and care.
Lifewalk is placing Mel Luoni at Winchester School. Mel was a part of the Winchester community from 2008-2016 when her two boys were students here. She has a big heart for helping children and is looking forward to hanging out at Winchester again 🙂 Mel will be known as our Pou Tautoko (pillar of support) and our tamariki will call her Pou Mel. She will be available on a Friday morning from term 2.
If you think your child would benefit from some extra support then please talk to your child's classroom teacher to put in an expression of interest.
