Thursday 27th April 2023 - Week 1 - Term 2
Kia Ora e te whānau,
Welcome back to Term 2 and an especially warm welcome to all of our new whānau who have joined us. A highlight for me is bringing our school community together for events, celebrations and special occasions. Our mihi whakatau is one of these special occasions where we welcome manuhiri (visitors) to our space and go through a mihi whakatau process of welcome to become tangata whenua. It removes the tapu (restrictions) of the manuhiri (visitors) to make them one with the tangata whenua (hosts).
The main difference between a pōwhiri and a mihi whakatau is that while a pōwhiri may be conducted on a Marae, a mihi whakatau can be done in other locations and may not feature a karanga (the call of the woman).
A mihi whakatau, will always have at least one speaker for each group - a speaker for manuhiri and a speaker for tangata whenua. Often after I have said my "mihi" or welcome speech, people say to me "that was beautiful, I have no idea what it meant but it was beautiful!".
I will outline briefly the elements of my mihi here so that we can learn together.
The process is repeated for the manuhiri side and then Tangata whenua will then complete the process and invite manuhiri to move across to harirū/shake hands and hongi/press noses with tangata whenua/hosts. Depending on alert levels this may be a friendly elbow bump
This is followed by partaking in kai/food. A mihi whakatau process is tapu (sacred) and food is noa (normal). It is important to eat or drink something to balance the tapu from the occasion.
RETIREMENT
We have sad and happy news for Mrs Day... she has decided to retire at the end of Term 2. Janferie has worked for Winchester School for almost 27 years, which is truly a significant amount of time! We are sad to be parting ways but at the same time we are happy and excited for you to joining the LAW society (Life After Winchester).
ANZAC DAY
Emmett from Room 4 represented our kura by being present at the ANZAC morning proceedings. Those medals look amazing on our school tracksuit! Thank you for representing our school. Lest We Forget ANZAC Day 2023.

I will outline briefly the elements of my mihi here so that we can learn together.
- I begin by stating phrase such as "Tihei mauri ora!" This can have many translations such as the 'life force is alive' or 'I am alive'.
- I then thank and welcome everyone for coming together for this occasion and that we will soon be one.
- Then I acknowledge all those who have passed before us, and all those that will come after us.
- I then acknowledge where we are situated in the land of Rangitāne (the mana whenua / iwi of our area). The mountains Ruahine and Tararua, the river Manawatū and the ancestors. I introduce our school as Te Kura o Te Haonui and our school's vision: "He kura maioha, he kura manahau, he kura whakamana tamariki" and finally who I am: Nic Mason, the principal of our school.
- There will then be a waiata that backs up my speech/mihi.
- And then finally, I finish by using a whakataukī or proverb that strengthens the message of the welcome - to work together or to focus on education and learning.
The process is repeated for the manuhiri side and then Tangata whenua will then complete the process and invite manuhiri to move across to harirū/shake hands and hongi/press noses with tangata whenua/hosts. Depending on alert levels this may be a friendly elbow bump

SPOTLIGHT STUDENT LEARNING
Ngā Uara
Thank you so much for your support for our Te Tuakiritanga - Identity Right Choice Recognition Day at the end of last term. Everyone embraced the opportunity to showcase their identity and it was very evident just how many different ways identity can be represented and expressed. This day also reflected our next uara focus - Māuitanga.
Māuitanga encourages our ākonga (learners) to walk in the footsteps of Māui. Māui is a central figure in Te Ao Māori. Māui displayed a sense of fun, curiosity, creativity, and innovation.
Mauitanga includes Manahau to be happy, jubilant, cheerful, and well-balanced; Pākiki to be inquisitive,
inquiring, curious, questioning, analytical and probing; and Auaha to be creative and innovative.
Why not ask your child what fun means to them and share a little Māuitanga together?
