Thursday 1 February 2024 - Week 1 - Term 1
Tēnā tātou e te whānau, a warm welcome to you all and welcome to 2024!
I hope you all have had a great summer break with friends and family. One of my favourite summer holiday memories as a kid was spending long amounts of time with my cousins on the black sand beaches of Taranaki. We'd disappear soon after breakfast, only to reappear when we were hungry. A quick sammy would satisfy the craving and then we'd be off again on another adventure 'til dark with our Mums chasing after us to reapply sunscreen!
Alas, the stretch of the long hot summer has come to an end. With the temperatures still high, we need to ensure that we continue to be sun smart - hats and and sunscreen are a must!
The start of the year is such an important time to get things right with building a positive classroom culture, setting expectations, learning routines and most of important - getting to know our ākonga!
We are going to move to sending out 3 newsletter per term this year: Week 1, 5 and 9. Real time communication of email, Seesaw and Facebook will replace the fortnightly communication of the newsletter.
POOL HELPERS
Ka nui te mihi ki a koutou! On the behalf of the pool community, thank you to our pool helpers who assisted with the maintenance of the pool over the summer break. Especially Pita from Think Water for sharing your expertise - we appreciate the crystal blue water! The pool will be in action for the kids for as long as the weather lasts.
A reminder to the community pool members:
STAFF UPDATES
Nicky Whitaker has an exciting opportunity present itself to her and she is leaving us at Winchester School. Her last day will be the 9th of February 2024. I'd like to take this opportunity to thank Nicky for everything she has done for our school and on the behalf of our school and community we wish you all the best for your endeavours, with Harrisons Curtains and Blinds!

A reminder to the community pool members:
- ensure that the pool door is closed at all times.
- that the pool is not open for community use until 3:15pm. This gives us a chance to put away resources and do important pool checks and cleans before the next day.
- keep changing room and toilet doors closed to prevent leaves blowing in there.

OUT OF ZONE ENROLMENTS T3
OUT OF ZONE - We are accepting Out of Zone Enrolments for children turning 5 in Term 3. There is one space for a child turning 5 in Term 2. We will be having a ballot for this on 1 March 2024. Please visit www.winchester.school.nz/new-enrolments.html to download an application.
PROPERTY UPDATES
I know it's hot and there are some classes who do not have heat pumps yet - we have two more 'Priority 2' jobs to complete in the 5YA before we can get onto the exciting stuff! They are the Lighting and Switchboard Upgrade (which should be finished between 15th and 24th of January). The other job is fixing the Clearlite and Small Roof Replacement and Reroute Downpipe project. This job hasn't been started yet.
We have been successful in funding from the Ministry of Education to update our perimeter fencing to help keep all ākonga safe. There are currently gaps and inconsistencies all around the place. This upgrade will incorporate wooden paling fences on the field and updated steel fences across the front and the back of the school. As the cage around the turf has been identified as a climbing risk, also in this proposal is to replace the turf with a lower steel framed fence.
There is a proposed bus shelter being built outside our school field on Ruahine Street (see image below). This is part of the city's new electric bus network for Palmerston North and Ashhurst. The proposal is to remove the existing bus stops (marked with a red cross) and replace with a covered bus stop. The school board have written a submission of concern of the impact of visibility for our road patrollers and the busyness of traffic in the placement of it being opposite of Roxburgh Crescent. You can read more on the Horizon's website: www.horizons.govt.nz/buses-transport/palmerston-north-and-ashhurst-network

The role involves the fortnightly co-ordinating of parents helpers to service and cook, ordering supplies and arranging collection of supplies.
