Thursday 2nd February 2023 - Week 1 - Term 1
Kia ora e te whānau, nau mai hoki mai and welcome back to school and a warm welcome to the new school year!
We hope you had a wonderful summer break filled with sunshine, fun and adventure. Winchester School Te Kura o Te Haonui would like to extend a special welcome to all of our new whānau and tauira joining our school community - nau mai haere mai.
As we embark on a new academic journey, let's make this school year the best one yet. We look forward to continuing our learning journey together and we are excited to see the growth and progress you have made over the break and can't wait to see what you will achieve this year.
We hosted a special Mihi Whakatau yesterday. I think it was the biggest welcoming I have seen since starting here! I'm really proud of our journey thus far. Our vision and aspirations to honour Te Tiriti o Waiatangi can be seen, heard and felt within our space. Also it's bringing our Ngā Uara (our values) alive. We strive to form and build on strong relationships. Thank you to the School Board and the PTA for your presence and help at this event.
TERM DATES FOR 2023
A reminder that our term dates for this year are as follows:
Term 1: Wed 1 Feb - Thu 6 April
Term 2: Wed 26 April - Fri 30 June
Term 3: Mon 17 July - Fri 22 Sept
Term 4: Mon 9 Oct - Fri 15 Dec
NB: There is a planned Staff Only Day on Monday 24th of April, followed by ANZAC day on the 25th.
STAFF LEARNING DAYS
As a staff we hosted a Te Tiriti o Waitangi learning day, led by Daniel Tawhai. Two years ago, we had a 2-day course hosted by his sister Veronica Tawhai. On Tuesday we tied our strategic improvement plan together with the current goals and improvements we are working towards. Both days were extremely informative and useful.
SUNHATS
For a number of years we have provided school sunhats to all of our learners but we have found that they are becoming tricky to fit to our learners and they are lost easily because they are not named with individual student names, therefore we have decided to change our sunhat system in 2023.
This year our Kauri team learners will be provided with a school hat. (Due to them not having long left at our kura).
Rimu and Kōwhai team learners will need to buy their own hat. School hats can be purchased at the school office for $14 or any Navy Bucket hat can be worn. (These are around $10 at places like the Warehouse).
OPTIONAL NEW WHĀNAU ORIENTATION
Friday 3rd Feb, 9am, please meet at the Tomokanga (Gateway)
Come along and meet us and learn more key information for our kura (school) and have a chance to ask us questions.

ADVERTISING
If you would like your business to be advertised on our website, (or you would like to continue to advertise on our website) please contact the office. The cost is $50 for the year.
PARKING
Please respect the Yellow Lines around our school. The Yellow Lines mean no stopping or no parking - there are usually plenty of parks close by, you will just need to travel a few more meters down the road to find them. At the end of the day, they are there to ensure the safety of our kids. Thanks for your cooperation with this.
THE SCHOOL POOL
Thank you to the families who looked after our pool over the summer. A special thanks to our caretaker, Phil. The pool has looked crystal blue all summer long.

A HEADS UP...
WAITANGI DAY
School will be closed on Monday the 6th February for Waitangi Day.
KŌRERO MAI
Meet the Learner Conferences are scheduled on 8th and 9th of February. Use the link below to book a conference time: https://www.schoolinterviews.co.nz/code/9pser
ASSEMBLIES
Assemblies will be every even week on a Friday at 2:15pm. The first Assembly will be next Friday, the 10th February.
NEWSLETTERS AND COMMUNICATION
Newsletters will come out every odd week starting today. We are going to make Thursday as our communication day. This means that we will try to only send newsletters and things home to you on a Thursday. We are trying to reduce the random permission slips coming home that get lost at the bottom of bags. Hopefully with this system, we can better communicate with you. I have also asked teachers and teams to follow this rule so we can streamline things a lot better.
NB: there may be, from time to time, emergency notes that we need to send home.
WELCOME BACK BBQ
Write in your diaries and calendars the 16th of February for our Community Welcome Back BBQ Picnic.
