WINCHESTER SCHOOL PĀNUI
Term 4  - Week 9 - Thursday 10th December 2020

Kia ora. Nau mai haere mai.

Kia ora e te whānau.
This is the last newsletter for 2020 and what a year it has been! It seems to have many parts to it and the thing I’m taking away with me due to all the challenges that we’ve faced, is that school is a lot more than the 3Rs. I have been impressed with student resilience to cope with all the changes that 2020 has presented. For me, the highlight was the school production and being able to come together as a community again.
I wish everyone a safe and happy holiday time. All the best to those families leaving us this year and I look forward to seeing you again in 2021.

SCHOOL ASSEMBLY
We are saying Farewell to our 6 students at school assembly tomorrow. We are starting at the earlier time of 2.15pm. Parents and whānau are welcome to join the school for this special assembly.

SCHOOL VALUES
The Board of Trustees has endorsed my recommendation that we adopt 5 values for our school. They will be Respect/Caring, Relationships, Fun, Integrity and Excellence. These 5 concepts are being translated in Te Reo Māori. We will introduce these 5 Values to the students during 2021.

LINE MARKING
Thanks to the PTA we will be able to have the line marking freshened up at school, which includes having the courts (netball and basketball) redone and some new lines added to our playground areas. This is possible thanks to the support of different fundraising efforts, most recently, the calendar orders. Thank you.

END OF YEAR REPORTS
Students (apart from Room 13) would have brought home their end of year report yesterday, and all students will have a stationery list showing their room number for next year.
For many children this means changing rooms, meeting new students and a new teacher. A lot of time and thought has gone into the class placements. Assure them they will be OK. They will visit their new class on Monday. Wait a few weeks at the start of next year to see how things are going.

PARENT HELPERS MORNING TEA
Please come along to the library at 11am tomorrow to join the staff for morning tea. It’s our way of saying thank you to the parents that helped us this year.

STAFF UPDATE
We’ve been discussing what we each want to be called by students and parents. Many staff are keen to be called by their first name, some wish to stay their title or Mrs, Mr etc.
My opinion on this is that each person in our school has the right to be called by the name they wish to be known by - we do this for students, and this is now being extended to our staff.
We will update you with this information, so you call staff by the name they want to be known by. I am wanting to be called Matua Bede next year.

END OF YEAR
School ends at 1pm on Wednesday 16th December. I wish everyone a happy and safe holiday time. The following families are leaving us as their youngest child is leaving Winchester School. Many of these families have a long association with our school and I thank you for your contribution to our school and for bringing your child to our school.
Ahmed, Attenborough, Azevedo, Barrett-Booth, Boness, Bourke, Dawber, Donaghy, Eagle-Humprey, Gu, Herdman, Hince, Manktelow, McDonnell, Murphy, Paterson, Peterson, Popova, Pullen, Singh-Homs, Roos, Slack, Smith, Stewart, Taonui, Tuthill, Zany, Zhou.
To any other family who is leaving, we wish you well for your move and your new school.

2021
School starts on Thursday 4th February for students. The office will be open on Tuesday 3rd February from 9am until 1pm. Please note that teachers are in meetings all day, as they are on the 1st and 2nd February along with 70 other teachers from 4 other schools who are joining us for two days for Treaty of Waitangi workshop days.

PĀNUI FROM MR MASON

PĀNUI FROM NIC

Tēnā koutou katoa, my last thought for the year has snuck up on me as I realise this is our last Thursday Newsletter for 2020. I’m sure you can agree with me that what a year, 2020 has been!

I am so grateful for the opportunity to learn and work alongside all of our staff and children here at Winchester School. Thank you to the whānau community for also welcoming me so warmly - Winchester School really is an incredible place to be.

To our Year 6s and Year 6 whānau leaving us, oh man! I wish I had some more time with you! The caliber of leadership skills I have noticed across Road Patrol, Winchester Wardens, Assembly Hosts and Winchester Wardens is excellent. I wish you all the best for 2021 and beyond - don’t be a stranger.

To everyone else, I wish you all a wonderful holiday season and look forward to tackling 2021 with you.

Ka mutu au ki te whakataukī - I will finish with a proverb.

He aha te mea nui o te ao? He tangata, he tangata, he tangata. What is the most important thing in the world? It is people, it is people, it is people.

Ko Laura Jessen ahau.

Tena koutou katoa, I am the Chairperson for the Board of Trustees and on behalf of the Board, I would like to say thank you to our school community.

2020 has been a different kind of year (to say the least) presenting unique challenges for the school and personal challenges for many in our community.  I am incredibly pleased with the way that Winchester School came together this year (from a safe social distance, of course!) and supported each other.  The close knit and caring Winchester community is, for me, a truly special character of our school and I’m constantly grateful to be a part of.

I want to recognise, in particular, all of our teachers and staff who have gone above and beyond to support our children as they’ve worked through lockdown and transitioned back to school for the remainder of the year.  Thank you.

I would also like to thank our Tumuaki, Bede Gilmore, for his leadership and guidance through the unchartered waters of 2020. I acknowledge and appreciate the dedicated, caring and focused way that he leads to the benefit of Winchester.

On behalf of the Board of Trustees, I wish our Winchester School whanau a safe and happy holiday break.

Naku te rourou nau te rourou ka ora ai te iwi

Upcoming Sports - Advanced notice

We are lucky to have been in contact with Steve from OnBoard Skate who has offered a cool new opportunity for our students who would like to learn to skateboard after school. We are in the early stages of planning, but it looks like this will be run after school on a Monday next year, beginning in Week 2 of Term 1. This would be $12 a session for 6 weeks.  It is designed for children of all ages and skill levels.  Steve has been running skateboard programmes in schools and community venues and public spaces for over 8 years.

PTA

Parent Teacher Association (PTA) - Year in Review.

The Winchester Parent Teacher Association supports the school through fundraising and providing
activities for involvement and connection within the school community, although we have had a quieter
year due to the obvious disruptions.

Thank you to everyone who has contributed to the PTA over the years. Fundraising initiatives over
previous years have left the PTA in a healthy financial position. This meant that despite the challenges
of the year we had funds in reserve to pay for: parents attending the Kauri Team camp in March,
sunscreen for the classrooms, contributing to the Year 6 breakfast next week, a professional
performance group visiting the school, and work on the netball hoops.

With fewer opportunities for fundraising this year, we are grateful for your support in purchasing
iceblocks, school calendar art, and the new egg fundraising initiative.

We have also organised the production of the personalised Winchester hoodies, which are popular
again this year. We aim to do another order in 2021. The hoodies are a practical item which kids are
keen to wear – showing their pride in belonging to our school community.

Many people are involved ‘behind the scenes’, volunteering your time to support PTA activities. We are
grateful for all your involvement in enriching our school community. A special mention to Doreen Ly,
Ann Mundel, Leila Chrystall, Sieda Hornby and Kathryn Knightbridge for your commitment and
enthusiasm. We acknowledge the work of Tracey Orr and Ainsley Kearney who stepped back from their
PTA roles in June this year. Thank you both for your significant contributions over the years.

We are grateful to Bede, the teachers and staff for their involvement and support of PTA activities.
You can follow PTA news and find out ways to be involved on the Winchester PTA Facebook page or
come along to our PTA meetings. Meetings are one or twice a term, on a Wednesday evening in
the staffroom. Everyone part of the school community is welcome at the meetings – come along to
share your ideas. At this moment, we are planning ahead for the Community Picnic and BBQ to start the
school year – see you there on 17th February!
Wishing you all a well-deserved summer break.

Acting Chairperson
