WINCHESTER SCHOOL PĀNUI
Term 1   - Week 3 - Thursday 18th February 2021

Kia ora e te whānau.

Upcoming events at school

SCHOOL ASSEMBLY
We are holding a School Assembly this Friday at 2.30pm. Parents and carers are welcome to join us. New students will be presented with their Book for Beginners. Nau mai haere mai.

For new families, normally we have assembly each fortnight, new students are introduced and are presented with their Book for Beginners, which they have chosen with me earlier in the week. We sing the national anthem, waiata, celebrate some work from a class and present Principal’s Awards which are nominated by their class teacher. We meet in the hall, and we normally have 50-60 parents and carers join us, which we love! So, if you do get the chance, come along.

YEAR 5 AND 6 CAMP
We are happy for parents to contact Nicky in the office to discuss payment plans. We want every child to attend, so please let us know if there is a problem. If you have questions, please see your child’s teacher first.

SCHOOL IMPROVEMENT PLAN
Each school is required to develop a 3 year improvement plan (sometimes referred to as a Strategic Plan or Charter).
Our School Improvement Plan is available through our website, here. The main goals we have this year involve developing culturally responsive and relational practices. This means, operating each classroom in a way that embraces relationships as the cornerstone for learning. We also aim to bring the Māori culture into all our classrooms and around school.
Mathematics is another key focus area for the staff as we review our approach and make sure we are getting the outcomes we desire. We are very pleased with our achievement in this area already.

POLICY REVIEW - HOME LEARNING
This term, we are seeking feedback on our Home Learning Policy. Our current policy states that the school will not supply formal home learning tasks. Due to children having after school interests we think it better to not have formal homework added on top, apart from a reading book to practise. It is highly debatable whether homework at primary school makes any difference to achievement.

COVID19 UPDATE
We have moved back to Alert Level 1. Please continue to scan the QR code displayed in all classrooms and around the school.

Thank you for your cooperation during Alert Level 2. We noticed a slight increase in the number of children staying home due to being unwell. Thank you for respecting the 2m distancing and for signing in when you entered classrooms.

We have been organising ourselves (just in case) by getting Distance Learning resources ready and gathering information about who might need a device and who might need to attend school. We've sent home Seesaw codes in case we move to Distance Learning at some point. It does not mean that we are anticipating anything and online work would only go live if needed.

PĀNUI FROM NIC

Tēnā koutou,

It's been a busy couple of days adjusting in between Alert Levels. Thanks to everyone for your cooperation and especially our staff for all mucking in to help get things organised. What a great team?!  Speaking of team, I am very lucky to be able to introduce some of our new staff and new Kaitiaki (student leaders) at Winchester School.
Firstly let me introduce our Term 1 Road Patrol team. I have been really impressed how your confidence is growing each day with clear loud voices. Thanks team, you are doing an outstanding job.

Hi Everyone,

My name is Rebecca Meade and I have the great privilege of being the Winchester School Resource Manager and Librarian. This means I have the awesome job of connecting the staff and children of Winchester School with amazing books and other resources. I started work here during Term Four last year and I am slowly getting to know children's names and which books they like to read. I would love to meet more children and parents, so if you are passing the library, pop in and say ”Hi!”

I am usually at school by about 8:45am and I finish at 1:15pm. During this time I am usually in the Library or the office area, where I also work at lunchtime. I look forward to getting to know more of the Winchester School community and starting some new library programmes for you to enjoy.

We are so grateful to have such amazing people join our school this year.

Nāku te rourou nāu te rourou ka ora ai te iwi - With your basket and my basket, we will sustain everyone.

Have a great weekend everyone and yay for Level 1!
Nāku noa, nā

BOARD OF TRUSTEES

Kia ora koutou, my name is Laureen King and I am the Staff Representative on the Board of Trustees.
This is a role I have held for over 10 years.

A little bit about who I am; My husband, Andrew, is a cabinet maker for a local firm and we have one daughter, Elleanor, who is Year 9 at St Peter’s College. We live out of town and enjoy having the space for a veggie garden, orchard and a handful of pets. The bulk of our free time is now spent on the side of a canoe polo court as this sport has become a passion for Elleanor.

Winchester School is a very special place to me for many reasons; I have taught here since 2004, I love the school environment, the diverse mix of learners and I believe wholeheartedly in our school vision, Elleanor was a pupil here and believe it or not, so was I!

Although my role here at Winchester is a long one I can proudly say I have taught every age level and have taken on a range of specific responsibilities over the years. I really enjoy being part of the BOT because it gives me an insight into the governance of the school and I value being able to contribute to the ‘big picture’ that enables Winchester to be an amazing place to learn and work.

BOOK ROOM HELP NEEDED:
It would be greatly appreciated if any parents are able to help file our little readers away in the book resource room. You can come before, during or after school, or any time that suits you.  If you've done it before the procedure is exactly the same as last year.  If you are a new parent please talk to Viv Storrier in Room 6 or Maree Woods in her office.  Teachers are always grateful to you for helping us out with this task.
ECO-NECTED CENTRE - WEEKEND FEEDERS:
If your family is interested in feeding our chooks and 2 guinea pigs in the weekend, please email secretary@winchester.school.nz or see Nicky in the office to go on the roster.
