Thursday 12 September 2023 - Week 9 - Term 3
Tēnā tātou e te whānau, nau mai ki te wiki o te reo Māori. Kia kaha tātou i te reo Māori!
In my 20s I went to Guatemala with my (now) wife and her family. We lived there for 6 months and I got the opportunity to learn Spanish. It was so hard and my brain hurt in places I had never felt before! However, little by little, 1 step forward and 3 steps back, I got there.
I am currently in my second year of learning Te Reo Māori and the interesting thing I found when I was at our 2-day full immersion Wānanga, I kept on translating what I wanted to say in English into Spanish and then finally into Māori. Has anyone had this same experience?
This year Te Wiki o Te Reo Māori asks us to share our why and here is mine. For me, learning another language was such a rewarding experience and enriched my brain. The research about the effects of being bilingual has is such a huge benefit. As partners in Te Tiriti o Waitangi, I see Te Reo Māori is part of our future, extending our minds with bilingual learning, enriching our understanding, enhancing our beautiful country Aotearoa New Zealand.
So in the morning, at the gate, anywhere in the school grounds karawhiua - give it a go!

As part of our annual review into the professional learning we have engaged in this year we are curious to see how we got on. This survey will inform our next steps for 2024 and beyond. We ask questions about our relationships with you and kura and also how you feel your child is learning at school. The survey should take about 5-10mins and there is a space at the end for any comments you wish to share with us.
Thank you so much for your time to do this. We appreciate it.
