Thursday 22 June 2023 - Week 9 - Term 2
Tēnā tātou e te whānau,
The end of term two is fast approaching and it is incredible to think we are half way through the school year. Today marks the Winter Solstice or the shortest day. Aotearoa New Zealand, where we are situated in the tilt on the earth's axis is the furtherest away from the sun. The great thing about the Winter Solstice is that from now on, the days will begin to get gradually longer as we make our journey towards summer.
STAFF UPDATES

We encourage you to spend time in different classes, not only in your child's classroom but in other classrooms. It is a chance to see what learning looks like across the school especially as your child transitions into different teams.

ASSESSMENT MID YEAR REPORTS
You can expect mid-year reports to be handed out at the end of this term. I would firstly like to thank our kaiako / teachers for the time, energy and work put into completing reports. To inform our decisions about judgements when reporting a series of observations, time, moderations, testing and marking takes place.
As a school we are always changing and improving our assessment practices as we engage in professional learning. This happens when we are exposed to new assessment practices that have been researched and normed across the rest of the country.
I would like to spend a few minutes talking about some of the drivers behind progress and assessment.
LEARNING CONFERENCES
Learning Conference bookings are now open for Wednesday 26 and Thursday 27 of July. Please note, based on our consultations in Term 1 the Learning Conferences will be for 15 minutes and therefore we will be having an early finish on Wednesday 26 to cater for this. Please use the following link to book your time: www.schoolinterviews.co.nz/code/k4m7u
Each classroom teacher will be in touch to clarify the purpose for the Learning Conference for you and your child/ren:
We look forward to seeing you at this important meeting.
MATARIKI
I had planned to do a hangi for Matariki this year but unfortunately, my access to a hangi kit is no longer available at this time. We are going to plan for a community event on the first Friday of Term 3, July 21 2023. More details to come.
BOOKFAIR
The Book Fair is scheduled for Week 2 of Term Three: 24 - 28 July 2023. This year's theme is "Hat's off to reading". We are going to have a "Hat themed" dress up day on Tuesday 25th July to promote the event.

I would like to spend a few minutes talking about some of the drivers behind progress and assessment.
- Learning is complex and often answers can show evidence of thinking across multiple levels.
- Progress does not happen in a nice straight line... there are plateaus and peaks, think about children's heights as they grow.
- It takes 2 years of "normal progress" to move through the curriculum levels e.g. Level 2.
- Assessment is used as a tool and not a weapon...
- We use assessment to inform next learning steps and potential and don't use it to hold learners back.
- Assessment is responsive: The school tracks progress and achievement to help us target areas where extra support is needed.
- Evidence suggests that when assessment is visible to learners, increased progress is made.

- meet the teacher/learner e.g. new teacher / learner relationship
- student led conference e.g. the learner will lead their own learning conference with goals that they have set with the teachers help
- 3-way conference: (5 mins for the learner, 5 mins for the whānau and 5 mins for the teacher)
- data or assessment chat (unpacking a recent assessment and how it sits in relation to the curriculum).
We look forward to seeing you at this important meeting.
