Thursday 23 November 2023 - Week 7 - Term 4
Tēnā koutou e te whānau, we haven't had the best run with the weather at the moment and unfortunately the Kauri team athletics was postponed to Friday 24 November (tomorrow). Fingers crossed we get some good weather for this! All the best with this event tomorrow for our young athletes.
ASSEMBLY
With athletics being moved to Friday, Assembly will still be on however, we will be missing our Kauri team. They will receive their Principal awards at their next team assembly. Kate, Maree and I will host the assembly in the Year 6s absence.
TEACHING TEAMS FOR 2024
Our processes for planning for teaching teams for the following year are now complete. We are happy to announce the follow:
Kauri: Sophie (Room 13), Matt (Room 12), Viv (Rm11), Sio (Room 10), Wendy (Y4/5, Room 5).
Rimu: Paula (Room 3), Ashleigh (Room 1) , Hamish (Room2), Deena (Year 2/3, Room 4).
Kōwhai: Laureen (Rm 14), Amanda (Room 15), Karen (Room 8), Rachel (Room 7), Marie (Room 6).
Jolanda will be providing CRT across the school and will be helping us to grow our confidence and competence in science over a two year period. In other news, Linda Hughes has accepted a position for 12 months to be our ORS specialist teacher. She will be stepping out of her normal classroom duties to support the learning needs of our ORS learners.
We welcome you to contact your child's classroom teacher for any requests that will help to cater for your child/ren's needs.
TEACHER ONLY DAY CURRICULUM REFRESH
The teaching staff spent the day yesterday learning about the new curriculum refresh.
The last curriculum was introduced in 2007. Here we are now in 2023 and what are the things that have changed in education since then?
Schools have seen a rise in a range of issues including equity, anxiety, social media, school readiness, free child care, Covid, trauma, and neurodiversity.
Currently there are 800 achievement objectives in the NZ Curriculum. These have been replaced with 40 progress outcomes.
The curriculum broadens the view of success by recognising the close relationship between achievement and wellbeing, and it underlines the importance of setting and supporting high expectations for ākonga, enabling all to learn and excel. It aims to transform educational inequities that exist in the current curriculum. The vision is about being really grounded in who we are and to reach our potential through inclusive, equitable and interconnected-ness.
All curriculum areas will follow the framework Understand, Know, Do.
Another key change is the removal of Levels. If you are a Year 1 or 2 learner, you will be working within Level 2, Year 3 or 4 should be working within Level 2 etc. It takes 2 years of normal progress to complete this level.
However, the levels are going to be replaced with "phases" as seen in the graphic below. In a school like us, we will be focusing on 2 phases: the "foundation phase" (Year 0-3) and the "expanding horizons" phase (Year 4-6).
I have searched for a parent's information page that I can share with you but I was unable to find one. However, if you are interested in reading more you can google "NZ Curriculum Refresh" and read through the material in available on the Ministry of Education's website.

All curriculum areas will follow the framework Understand, Know, Do.
- Understand: At the heart of each learning area is a unique set of big enduring ideas that all ākonga can relate to and access.
- Know: Contexts highlight these big ideas and bring them to life.
- Do: Ākonga develop practices that enable them to think and act as ‘experts’ within each learning area and across the learning areas (e.g., as an artist, a scientist, or a storyteller).

Kauri Book Buds
The Kauri team were very fortunate to recently take part in the Book Buds reading programme in conjunction with the Palmerston North City Library. This encouraged our ākonga to read and complete book reviews which they then discussed with staff from the library. It was a wonderful opportunity for students to share their interest in books with other adults beyond our school and culminated in a celebration at Team Assembly where many were able to select their own book to keep. A huge thanks goes to Rhonda and her team of librarians who supported us.
Reading for pleasure is hugely important. If you are interested in promoting this more with your children you may be interested in registering for the free Library Summer Reading programme which starts soon and runs over the upcoming summer break.
