Kia Ora ano e te whānau,
Thank you for all of your flexibility with navigating the interuptions with sickness throughout the last week. We are experiencing this across the sector. I will leave you with Bede's final thoughts.
FINAL MESSAGE FROM BEDE
Kia ora e te whanau,
My thoughts have been with you all over the past week as I have been at home unwell and hearing how many students and staff have also been away feeling unwell. Sensible decisions have been made, by Nic and others, about doing our best to keep our school open, while managing classes where staff members have been away or where there have been peaks in illness in some classes.
I am hearing that many schools are in similar positions to ours with winter illness and Covid cases.
All the best for the last 3 weeks of term everyone. I look forward to seeing Te Ope Kura (Year 4 to 6) on stage at Te Pae Tamariki, and of course the school musical later in Term 3.
My final newsletter message to you all - thank you! I can't believe that 6 years have passed since I started here as Principal and I will take with me so many fond memories of our special school, such as Friday assemblies (always a highlight handing out awards, seeing student work and hearing lovely singing voices and productions, but most of all, seeing and hearing happy students at our school.
On a personal note, I would like to recognise two things. Firstly, I am proud of what has been achieved across many areas of our kura, but none more so than raising the prominence of Te Ao Māori and placing it where it ought to be in our school. My own journey into confidently speaking Te Reo Māori has been equally rewarding. A special mention to Dr Rawiri Taonui for his tutoring and guidance in this area. Seeing the tomokanga shine each morning as the sun rises at the start of each day makes me smile. I am delighted that we have Rangitāne iwi in our school.
Secondly, I wish to thank my wife Karen and my family for all the support they have offered me as I have navigated this leadership journey, not only at Winchester School but over the past 13 years while I have been a Principal.
I want to thank you all too. I have enjoyed getting to know many of you and talking with you about your children and our school. Thank you for all the support I have received from you.
I would like to acknowledge present and past Board members who have always given me their full support, while still asking questions of me, in their role of governing our kura.
I wish the staff all the best and want to thank them also for the amazing job they do each and every day to support the students of our school. I have the utmost respect for each and every person on the staff and have thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to work with them.
Finally, to all the students at our school. I will miss you. I am proud of you. Keep being kind and keep being awesome. Thank you for the way you represent our school. You are a credit to yourselves and to us all.
Tomorrow is my last day at school and then I have a little time (a few days) between jobs and you will soon see my name and face pop up in a new setting.
I think that staying on as a parent of the school is cushioning the blow of leaving, as I will still be coming into school frequently, but in a different role. So it doesn't feel like goodbye for me. I might run into you at the school gate or at assembly and I look forward to continuing my support of Winchester School Te Kura o Te Haonui.
It has been a privilege to serve the Winchester School community for the past 6 years and I wish every person connected to our school all the very best for the future.
Bede Gilmore.
