Wednesday 15th March 2023 - Week 7 - Term 1
Kia Ora e te whānau,
We are putting out an early newsletter this week because of the teacher strike scheduled for Thursday 16th of March. Thank you for all of the support from our whānau and community. I understand that the short notice is inconvenient, thanks for your flexibility and cooperation.
Our teachers work tirelessly to welcome all ākonga into their spaces, provide a safe and nurturing environment for students to learn and grow. They work hard to meet the needs of every single learner in our school. Teachers make a difference and I am so proud of all of our teachers at Winchester School Te Kura o Te Haonui.
As a collective, we are asking for better funding to resource the sector, to meet the needs of learners, and to attract and retain high quality teachers. Our ākonga deserve the best to invest in their future.
If your child/ren are coming to school on Thursday, please direct them to the Library to start the day. There will be two teachers there to greet you and get set up for the day. Please inform them if you are intending to pick up your child/ren early. If you haven't let the school know if your child/ren are coming for supervised care, please let the school know today: forms.gle/kHQ7z6NxT7aSeux76
KUPU HOU - TE REO PHRASE OF THE WEEK
Tō kaha hoki (Tore kaha hooky) - Wow! You are good! I would love to hear you try this with us on the Road Patrol crossing.
ENROLMENTS
If you have a 4 year old who is turning 5 soon please contact enrol@winchester.school.nz to let us know or see Nicky in the office for an enrolment pack.
KŌRERO MAI FEEDBACK
Thank you for your feedback. As with any change or innovation, I always start out with having more questions than answers... Your comments have caused us to ask ourselves the following questions:
We will work on creating a Learning Conferences guide so we are really clear on why we do them, how they operate and what they will look like based on the feedback from our teachers and our whānau.
SCHOOL POOL
The School Pool is winding up for class lessons at the end of this week. It will be closed for the community on Friday the 24th of March. I am hoping that we can have one last swim at the PTA Whānau Welcome back BBQ!

KŌRERO MAI FEEDBACK
Thank you for your feedback. As with any change or innovation, I always start out with having more questions than answers... Your comments have caused us to ask ourselves the following questions:
- Purpose: what is the purpose for Kōrero Mai/Meet the Learner? How are they different to Learning Conferences?
- Next Steps: what if my child is in the same teacher's class? How do we move forward with next learning goals? How do we differentiate Kōrero Mai when this occurs?
- Transition: how do we ensure information is shared with new teachers? What information should be shared?
- Time: how do we get the amount of time right when most people are happy and some need a few extra minutes?
- How do we clearly communicate this?
We will work on creating a Learning Conferences guide so we are really clear on why we do them, how they operate and what they will look like based on the feedback from our teachers and our whānau.

PLAY FIRST, EAT SECOND
In Term 2, we are going to trial a "Play First, Eat Second" model at our school. This means that when the bell goes for morning tea and lunch breaks the tamariki will go straight out to play. When the bell goes again, they will come back to eat for 10 minutes under the supervision of their teacher. There will be some changes to the timetable for Term 2, however, there will be no change to the amount of learning time during the day as we currently have.

The benefits of play first, eat second are:
- improved social connections for all learners
- less negative behaviour/interactions in the playground
- tamariki eat more and therefore receive more nutrients for their bodies and brains to grow
- tamariki slow down to appreciate their kai having digestion benefits
- improved behaviour and focus in class
- this all has positive effects on learning.
