Thursday 22nd August 2024 - Week 5, Term 3
Mālo e lelei,
Winchester School Te Kura o Te Haonui is a hive of activity. Thanks to our amazing team of staff and whānau who help us to create a culture of opportunity and growth.
ROADWORKS, CROSSING ON RUAHINE STREET AND PARKING
Thank you for your ongoing flexibility and cooperation with driving around our school area with the interruptions of road works. Continue to talk with your children about having road sense. A good way to do this is by using questioning using the senses =
We are also noticing that adults are crossing on Ruahine Street and not using the pedestrian crossing. I understand that we are all busy and wanting to get to the next location but we need to be good role models for our children; safety first. Can everyone please use the crossing to support this safety message?
Your children's legs won't fall off either if they have to walk a few extra steps in the rain. Please use the carparks available when dropping your children off. Yellow lines mean no stopping / no parking. Thanks
MATHEX
Well done to our Year 5 and 6 Mathex Teams who competed in the Manawatu Mathex Competition. Some great results were achieved, with our Year 5 competitive team gaining a 4th equal placing and our Year 6 team getting 2nd equal. Also, well done to our two challenge teams, for each gaining Gold placings. A big thanks goes to Mr Murphy for giving up his lunchtimes to train our teams and to the whānau who supported on the day.

- What can you hear? Do you hear tyres on the road?
- Looking both ways, what can you see?

In our 2024/25 Strategic Plan, we have identified an opportunity to grow and inspire learning through the Science Curriculum and by:
- Creating an environment where questioning, wondering, and making connections are explicitly taught
- Developing dispositions like curiosity, confidence, critical thinking, growth mindset, resilience, seeking critique (feedback and feedforward) in both students and staff
- Students engage in hands-on science activities and experience learning through exploration
- Develop active engagement in a wide range of science-related activities that stimulate curiosity and encourage students to make connections across various scientific concepts
KAURI TEAM BOOK BUDS
Kauri Team have once again been very fortunate to join with the City Library to be part of the Book Buds winter reading programme. Over 6 weeks, each child in Kauri team was encouraged to read books and record reviews as part of the mahi. City library staff visited school on several occasions to provide feedback to the akōnga which was hugely beneficial to the students who loved the programme.
The Kauri Team enjoyed the finale event last Thursday where many students were able to choose a new book to keep. Our thanks go to Rhonda Chenery and her team of library staff who supported students on their reading journey. We hope that we can take part in the programme again next year. Keep up the great reading, everyone.

SANDPIT
An amazing group of parents and supporters of our school are going to be getting spaces ready for the sandpit during the weekend. If you are in and around the school, please respect the cordoned off areas. I would like to welcome an ex teaching friend of mine, Craig Browne, to Winchester School. He is going to be volunteering his time to build the sand pit for us. He is also helping with the construction of props for the production. We value your time volunteering your skills at our school! Thanks Jono, Alisha, Richard and Kevin also for your time in supporting us.
