Tēnā tātou e te whānau,
One of the most rewarding parts of my job is getting the opportunity to show new people around our school. Whether it be new whānau, visiting teachers, Te Mahau (MOE) or people wanting to work at our school, it is a pleasure to show them around and connect the special things that make Winchester School "Te Kura o Te Haonui".
Our tamariki are engaged in the process of learning, with our kaiako teaching in a range of ways that meets the needs of all learners. I am proud of everybody's efforts.
HUI HUI HUI
During the last fortnight, I have been involved in a lot of hui. These hui have included Māori Achievement Collaborative (MAC), Manawatū Principal Association, Communities of Learning (Kāhui Ako), Principal Professional Learning Groups (PLG), Senior Leadership Review day and a Governance Training on Te Tiriti o Waitangi with the Board of Trustees. To be honest, I am feeling quite overwhelmed by the amount of information that I have received during this time! However, one thing is for sure, it has given me reassurance of the direction we are going as a learning community. A big thank you to the leadership team and teaching team who have stepped up in my absence. We will be processing this new learning in the coming months.
PROPERTY UPDATE
There are a number of property works in the pipeline that will begin soon. All projects are divided into "priorities 1-4". Basically, schools have to complete all Priority 1 (P1) projects before they can start Priority 2 (P2) projects and so on and so forth. Fortunately, our projects are split into 2 priorities: P2 work and P4. The P2 work must be completed before any P4 work can begin.
The P2 works are:
HUI WHĀNAU / PASIFIKA FONO
Thank you to our whānau for meeting with us yesterday. Thank you to Whaea Paula for your organisation in planning and facilitating this event. We had great conversations and it made me think about our next steps especially around creating space for Te Ao Māori to be visible (seen, heard and experienced). When I talk about Te Ao Māori I am talking about all of the important things that pertain to Māori including te reo Māori (language), matauranga Māori (Māori knowledge), tikanga/kawa (respectful ways to do things).
We began planning for our community Matariki / Puanga celebrations and we are keen to have a go at a hangi. I have put down a vegetarian hangi with help before. I am very much a novice so if there is anyone who has experience and could advise us please get in contact: principal@winchester.school.nz
Next week, we look forward to hosting our Pasifika fanau with a fono / talanoa: Thursday 1st June at 5pm.
REPORTING ABSENCE
With the Winter season approaching fast and an increase of absences could you please support us by reporting your child's absence by 9am. You can do this via text, app, email or phone message.
CONTINUED INDUSTRIAL STRIKE ACTION
NZEI members have voted for potential strike action next week on Wednesday 31st of May. We will find out on Sunday evening what the outcome of this is. We will then communicate to you via email the next steps.
