Thursday 3 August 2023 - Week 3 - Term 3
Kia ora koutou e te whānau,
Thank you for making our Learning Conferences a success. We had over 85% of engagement when I closed the the bookings and I know that our teachers followed up and added more. We are working hard to ensure that we clearly communicate your child/ren's learning progress and achievement with you. We hope that you find the helping at home hand out useful.
ACHIEVEMENT TARGETS FOR 2023
Winchester School Te Kura o Te Haonui is a high performing school, and we continue to have very high standards of achievement across the community. Our targets for 2023 are the following:
I'm delighted to share with you that our mid-year data tells us that we are on track with these targets:
Well done to our ākonga/learners, well done to our kaiako/teachers, well done to our kaiawhina/learning coaches and well done to our whānau/family. It has been a team effort. There is still work to be done - and hopefully the learning goals and targets shared at our Learning Conferences will give us all the direction needed to keep going. Mahia te mahi - do the work.
TEACHER LEARNING - JUGYOU KENKYUU
Equally with our student learning targets, the adults in our school are expected to grow and develop; like our school vision encourages "life-long learning". As part of our Professional Growth Cycle, teachers are engaging in a systematic study into their pedagogical practices through a close examination of their lessons. This process is called Jugyou Kenkyuu and it's when a group of professional teachers meet regularly over a short period of time to collaboratively plan a "perfect lesson" designed to positively impact student achievement. We are focused on the impact of explicit and visible learning in mathematics.

MURALS
We have been looking into making our school more attractive by creating murals on some of our blank white outdoor walls. We have a few ideas for designs and even have some talented artists in our community who are willing to work with our ākonga to create these murals. We are wondering if there are any businesses out there who would be willing to donate money to get these projects completed. Please email k.marshall@winchester.school.nz if this is something you would be interested in doing.

Ngā Uara
The first uara we are focusing on this term is Te Puāwaitanga. This recognises that each ākonga/student has unique mana, integrity, qualities, skills, gifts, and abilities. The school nurtures the student as a seed in preparation for their continuing journey through life.Te Puāwaitanga is also highlighted with this whakatauki - Poipoia te kakano kia puāwai: Nurture the seed and it will blossom
Our recent Learning Conferences were an excellent opportunity for us to highlight with you how much your child has grown. We appreciate the active involvement you have in our kura and acknowledge the importance of your work at home to support your child’s learning.
Within the school environment we encourage all our learners to be actively involved in their learning and strive to be clear with them so they know their learning steps. Also, engaging in wider experiences like playing in a range of spaces in the school, joining a sports team, or being a Kaitiaki when in the Kauri team. Experiences in and out of the classroom, and within our community all contribute to the development of our Uara - Te Puāwaitanga.
If your child has had successes outside of school, eg: achievement in a music exam or representing Manawatū in sport, please share this with us. We love celebrating our learners.

BOOKFAIR - HATS OFF TO READING
Thank you to Rebecca for all of your work to lead this event. It was a fantastic week. I heard a lot of our ākonga/learners negotiating extra chores at home to justify buying books and journals! What a great excuse to do some more reading and writing.

SHOWCASING SUCCESS
Oscar and Aaron competed in the Red Sox U11 football team over the school holidays at the Christchurch International Cup and their team came 4th out 16 teams. A huge result against some of the best players in that age group in NZ!
TREASURE ISLAND SHOW: We all thoroughly enjoyed watching the NZ Playhouse show of Treasure Island, last week. A big thanks to the Winchester School PTA for funding this show for our tamariki and kaiako to enjoy.
