Thursday 11th May 2023 - Week 3 - Term 2
Tēnā koutou,
Week 3 has rolled around quickly and there is lots going on around our school, our community and wider city. I feel very proud of our city to have the number of events and opportunities to be creative and bring people together. The winter sports season has kick started and as a father, I look forward to watching my kids play and enjoy sports from the sideline. Being part of a team can be a very rewarding experience. Well done to all of our Winchester kids, getting involved in the sports codes available. Thank you to all of our parent coaches for your time and energy to coach our teams - I hope you will find it as rewarding as the kids involved.
As a school community, we are excited to be continuing our learning journey, we have our classroom routines and expectations established and we are now really focused on the learning goals for both ourselves (adult learning) and our tamariki.
RONGOHIA TE HAU
At the end of 2022, our Within School leaders of the Kāhui Ako consulted with learners, teachers and whānau on a range of experiences at Winchester School Te Kura o Te Haonui. As a teaching staff, we have analysed and synthesised the data collected to help us decide on the direction for our growth this year. The question or challenge that has risen to the top through this process is: "HOW MIGHT WE BE MORE EXPLICIT/TRANSPARENT ABOUT LEARNING?" Do our learners actually know what it is they are learning? And how is this shared with whānau?
Over terms 2 and 3, our teaching staff will be exploring this question together and work towards answering the question how can we make learning visible for our learners?
PLAY FIRST EAT SECOND
We have had excellent feedback with this initiative - comments from our tamariki (children), kaiako (teachers) and whānau have all been positive with the exception that the tamariki have been much hungrier! If possible can everyone pack some extra kai (food) to cater for this? Thanks.
REPORTING ABSENCE
With the Winter season approaching fast and an increase of absences could you please support us by reporting your child's absence by 9am. You can do this via text, app, email or phone message.
CONTINUED INDUSTRIAL STRIKE ACTION
If you have children who are in high school, you will be experiencing the rolling strikes from their planned industrial action. Primary schools and primary school principals are part of a different collective called NZEI. NZEI's timeline has been different to the high school union and as a result we are still at the negotiating table. I will inform you of the outcome of these decisions when I know.
I feel it important to explain about the recent class size announcement from 1:29 to 1:28. It will make no difference to the running of our school and therefore the outcomes for learners. In the fine print, they will be deducting some staff out of our Community of Learning allowance, so that equates to about 13% of 1 teacher in 2024. In 2025 we will gain 20% of 1 teacher. In essence with the difference I could employ a reliever to work 1 day a fortnight with what we are being given. To actually gain a full teacher a school would need to have approximately 1700 students in Years 4-8. The staff ratio announcement will provide no improvement to support our schools learning programmes at all! We are facing some real challenges in education. We are losing teachers to far higher paying jobs overseas and there is a significant teacher shortage across the country. This affects every parent and caregiver reading this newsletter as we want the very best teachers in front of our our children. It is important that as a school community we continue to share these concerns to the government for the betterment of our tamariki community.

LEARNING CONFERENCE FEEDBACK
During term 1, I collected feedback about our learning conferences from whānau, teaching staff and learners. The Kahikatea leadership team have taken everyone's feedback and created the following document that explains what our Reporting to parents on progress and achievement looks like in practise across the year. The purpose of the document is to clarify with all parties what to expect from our reporting to parents policy.

PTA
Following our recent AGM, I would like to congratulate ALL the PTA office holders on being re-elected for another term.
Chairperson - Katrina O'Riley
Vice Chairperson - Sieda Hornby
Secretary - Leila Chrystall
Treasurer - Doreen Ly
Elected committee members - Lotty de Bres and Jess Robinson
A lot has been achieved in this past year which is a testament to the time and hard work put in by all the committee members in their various roles, so I thank you all for your time and efforts.
The contribution of many other parents/PTA members has not gone unnoticed either, and without the time you’ve given to attend meetings, volunteer, organise and support our events and fundraisers we wouldn’t be as successful as we are, so a huge thank you to you all.
UPCOMING FUNDRAISING EVENTS
The focus for our fundraising efforts this year will be for the installation of a new upgraded sandpit area!
NEW BOARD GAMES/CLASSROOM PLAY EQUIPMENT
Earlier this year the PTA gifted a total of $1500 ($100 to each classroom) to purchase new board games or play equipment for the classroom. It was lovely to receive cards and letters from both Room 1 & Room 3 thanking us for their new games. There were lots of different favourites! I'm sure these will get a lot of use during wet break times, and more.
LUNCHBOX FUND
Thank you to our very kind and generous school community! You're amazing!
Last term we introduced the Lunchbox Fund initiative which has been so well supported by you all, with both donated goods from the wish list, and monetary contributions on kindo.
Your support means that those who come to school with an empty tummy or no lunch box, have access to a great variety of food options to keep their body fueled for the day.
Ngā mihi nui ki a koe!
LUNCHES
Subway & Sushi are available every fortnight throughout the year, with Sausage Sizzle & Pizza alternating in between. Next Thursday we have Sausage Sizzle!! All orders are to be placed on Kindo. Keep an eye out on the Winchester School PTA facebook page for weekly reminders, or check out Kindo to see what lunch is on offer each week.
HELPERS NEEDED!
Approximately 3 helpers are needed each fortnight on Thursday to help with Pizza and Sausage Sizzle. If you are able to help at the below times on any day/s this term, please add your name to the post on the Winchester School PTA facebook page, or feel free to email me your availability at katrinahigson@hotmail.com and I will pass on to Sieda.
Pizza - helpers are needed at school from 1pm-1.40pm on Thursday 1st June and 29th June to help carry pizza boxes from front carpark to the hall, set up tables in the hall, hand out pizza slices and to clean tables and remove rubbish.
Sausages - helpers are needed at school from 12.50pm-1.40pm on Thursday 18th May and 15th June to set up table outside of the hall, put napkins between slices of bread, cook and hand out sausages, clean up and remove rubbish
YUMMY STICKERS
Sticker collection sheets were sent home at the end of Term 1. You will find stickers/cut out labels on apples/apple bags at Pak'nSave, New World and Four Square stores.
Each sticker/cut out means points for our school which enables us to get free sports equipment at the end of the year. Last year we got around $1314 worth of free sports gear thanks to all the collecting done by our school community!
Once your sheet is full, please attach any cut out labels and drop it into the PTA drop box in the office foyer. You can collect a new sheet from the office if needed.
EGGS
The Egg Project kindly supports our school in our fundraising efforts by giving us back $1 from each dozen sold! Last term we received $322! They are delicious farm fresh eggs from a local business.
If you would like to order eggs for collection from school on Thursdays at 3pm, go to www.theeggproject.co.nz, use code SCH-005 and place your order before midnight on Tuesdays.
