WINCHESTER SCHOOL TE KURA O TE HAONUI PĀNUI
Term 2 - Week 2 - Thursday 12 May 2022
Tēnā koutou katoa. Greetings to everyone.
I congratulated the students on an excellent first week and we gathered together as a school on Friday last week to practise for assembly. It was the first time for a number of students to gather as a whole school. We practised our waiata "Whakataka te Hau" and National Anthem and went over how to receive an award, such as the Principal's award. I explained that each teacher nominates 1 or 2 students each assembly for this award and I am the lucky one who gets to present the award to them. We finished off by singing "Pepeha" by Six60 and then explained how a class is chosen each assembly for the Assembly Award for being the best class at assembly. Room 1 got the honour of this and will choose the best class at our first assembly in Week 3.

DATES FOR ASSEMBLIES
Week 3 - Friday 20th May
Week 4 - Friday 27th May
Week 6 - Friday 10th June
Week 8 - Thursday 23rd June
Week 10 - Friday 8th July
School assembly is held in our school hall. We have seating for parents. Assembly starts at 2.30pm. If you are new to our school, please come along to experience a school assembly. We will ask that parents wear masks when attending school assemblies.
NZ SIGN LANGUAGE WEEK
This week is NZ Sign Language Week. The theme this year is NZ Sign Language is Essential. Watch the video to see more.
At Winchester School te Kura o te Haonui we use sign language with some of our school songs (National Anthem at assembly for example)and many children can sign their name and greet others.
For those interested in learning more sign language this website has lots of great resources.
PARENT TEACHER INTERVIEWS
Next week we are holding 10 minute meetings for you to have a quick catch up with your child's teacher. 215 bookings have been made. There is still time to make a booking if you haven't already. Interviews begin at 3.30pm on Wednesday 18th May and Thursday 19th May.
This is your chance to see how Term 1 progressed and to set priorities for learning throughout Term 2. Teachers will have some recent assessment information to share with you and they will want to find out from you what priorities you have for your child's learning. Teachers are there to share and also to listen.

BOARD ELECTIONS
Elections are being held in September this year. They are held every 3 years. Our current Board has set a date of 7 September and is working towards having the voting done online.
As parents of our school you are eligible to vote in the election.
If it is a postal vote, as it has been in the past - are you 100% certain we have your correct address? Have you moved from the address you enrolled your child with?
Is being a Board member something that interests you? You will have the opportunity to express your interest and be nominated as part of the process.
More information will come out closer to the time.

PĀNUI FROM NIC

25 YEARS
Kia Ora koutou,

What were you doing in May of 1997?

Well for Maree Woods and Janferie Day, our two awesome leaders and kaiako at Winchester School Te Kura o Te Haonui, they were beginning a wonderful 25+ year journey with our community.
25 Years! I wonder how many kids and adults you have inspired, led, taught, encouraged, said “good morning” to over that time?
Maree and Janferie, you two are absolute gems and we are so lucky to have you as part of our Winchester School Te Kura o Te Haonui whānau.

HAPPY 25 YEARS!!

(Also thanks to Deena for the delicious cake!)

KAPA HAKA / TE PAE TAMARIKI
It was awesome reconnecting with our Kapa Haka last week! This year the kaiako supporting Kapa Haka are Aliza (Learning Support teacher), Whaea Paula (Room 4 classroom teacher) and me (Nic!). Supporting us this year we have Whaea Meta (who supported me at Russell Street School with Kapa Haka) and Papa Richard (one of our awesome parents who is very swish on the guitar).

The waiata can be accessed on our School Website Te Ope Kura page.

This year, we are running a Y 4-6 group for Te Pae Tamariki. Please pencil in your calendars a performance at the Regent on the Tuesday the 5th of July time TBC.

KAURI TEAM VISIT TO CREATIVES IN SCHOOLS

The Kauri Team visited the Airport and Te Motu o Poutoa (ANZAC Park, AKA Porkchop Hill) yesterday. Toi Warbrick guided us through significant locations to Rangitāne and artworks that are displayed (Okatia/Okātia, Whangaimokopuna, Haunui-a-Nanaia, Whatonga etc.). We had an awesome day and the students were fantastic! Thank you to all of our parent helpers who supported us on the day. Check out the awesome photos below: Te Motu o Poutoa (also known as ANZAC Park), Art by Reweti Arapere, and that it's called: NGA TAPUWAE O HAUNUI-A-NANAIA.
CREATIVES IN SCHOOLS AND PRODUCTION TERM 3

As mentioned above, the Kauri Team were successful in winning a Creatives in Schools grant for 2022. Creatives in Schools is a Ministry of Education initiative giving ākonga an opportunity to learn alongside real artists who live creatively for a living. Virginia and Warren Warbrick (Rangitāne), AKA Toi Warbrick, are our creative experts who are working alongside us to explore a number of wonderful learning opportunities.

They will provide us the opportunity to experience using knowledge of stories, in relation to place, to produce a live performance in a creative way.

The outcome of this work is to create a performance in Term 3 for an audience, exactly the time when we had planned our School Production!

We do not want to over load our teachers or students, so we are going to use the learning from Creatives in Schoools as a basis for our Production this year.

Some of you will be familiar with our Teams Production (that we missed out on last year), where each team creates a performance based on a common theme. We will also have performances by Te Ope Kura, Choir and other performance groups. By doing this, hopefully we will be able to carry on with a show despite the unpredictable comings and goings of students and staff.

But for now, please put in your calendars the 27th of September as our school performance / production.

Eco-nected Centre weekend helpers
If you are interested in going on a weekend roster to look after our eco-nected animals please email Nicky at secretary@winchester.school.nz to express interest.
We have guinea pigs and chickens that need their water and food to be checked and topped up on both days of the weekend, so please make sure you can commit to this before offering.
ROOM 11's CHAPTER CHAT BOOK
Room 11’s Chapter Chat book this term is The Explorer by Katherine Randell. Through this book we are learning how an author creates a picture in the reader’s head.
We wrote descriptions about dragonflies.
Kaylee took a clever twist on this task. She hasn’t finished yet but we wanted to share her wonderful writing.
