Thursday 25th July 2024 - Week 1, Term 3
Kia ora e te whānau,
Nau mai hoki mai to Term 3. I hope that you all had a restful school holidays.
LEARNING CONFERENCES
Thank you to everyone for making our Learning Conferences a success. We have had 326 bookings, which is fantastic. Your child's teacher will be in touch to reschedule if you were unable to make it. Two comments I have heard so far are of how well our teachers know your children - this is very affirming for us, thank you. The second is the sub levels on the school reports e.g. Level 2 Beginning, Level 2 Proficient etc. Showing sub levels would make it easier to see progress. Thanks for this feedback and we will add it to our review notes to discuss before next report time in November.
SCHOOL DOCS
We will send an email out to all whānau with the Term 3 Policy reviews.

CHILD PROTECTION & ABUSE RECOGNITION
As part of of our 2024 Strategic plan and policy review schedule, all teaching staff completed training and professional development in the Child Protection & Abuse Recognition during the non-contact time. All staff at Winchester School have a responsibility for child protection. We put procedures in place to protect the safety of our students throughout recruitment, training, and safety checking, and ensure current staff are familiar with our Child Protection policy and procedures. We also promote awareness about student welfare to our wider school community.
Staff have a professional responsibility to report any concerns about student safety and welfare, particularly in regard to abuse, neglect, or professional misconduct to the designated child protection person. We remind staff not to act alone when responding to student concerns, unless there is immediate danger. If it is in the best interest of the student, staff members are encouraged to proactively share information with other people or organisations who may be able to help.
We invite whānau to read and familiarise yourselves with the relevant policies on our School Docs website. We also developed this poster that will be put in classrooms to support our learners.
INNOVATION HUB
I have added these to the calendar for the community to see as there will be some Thursdays where we will not run the Innovation Hub e.g. tonight due to the Book Fair and Learning Conferences. The Innovation Hub will be in Room 9 for the next 2 weeks. Stacie is planning some challenges to complete during their time.
ROADWORKS
Thank you for your ongoing flexibility, understanding and support around the roadwork interruptions around our school zone. Despite best intentions, the work in both locations has happened simultaneously. The good news is, we will have a speed bump and pedestrian crossing out the front of our school and a Storm Water upgrade on the other side... two very important upgrades.
From today between the hours of 7:30am and 9:15am the PNCC will make it a one-way traffic flow around Newcastle, Ascott, Pahiatua and Ruahine Street. It can add a few minutes to your morning however, it is much safer for our kids!
FENCE PROJECT UPDATE
You can find new details of the fence project in the Rawa/Property section on our website.

KIND HEARTS
Our Rimu & Kauri teams are heading to the Awapuni Racecourse, in Week 3, to take part in the Kind Hearts in Schools Regional Event.
Kind Hearts have linked up with REPLAY – a local trust that recycles sports gear and they are challenging us to bring some recycled sports gear to the Kind Hearts Regional Day. If you have any sports gear you don't want anymore or old sports shoes or boots then drop them to the green box at the school office and we will donate them to this awesome cause.
The REPLAY goal is reconnecting sport gear that is no longer needed to enable others in our community to be active.

LIFEWALK SERVICE - POU TAUTOKO
A reminder we have Pou Mel from Lifewalk, an organisation providing support for school students. Lifewalk train Chaplains who can walk alongside students who need a little extra support, encouraging them to engage in all aspects of their school experience. When social/emotional competence is low, this can affect academic engagement. In response to this, Lifewalk Chaplains provide individual support to students, offering them a listening ear – with empathy and compassion and without judgement.
Lifewalk Chaplains provide a safe environment for a child and encourage them to share what is going on for them, recognising that they are a valuable part of our world, and have much to offer. Chaplains are not trained counsellors, they are considered ‘friends of the school’ who simply make themselves available to spend time with children/young people. They are volunteers and their role is to listen and care.
If you think your child would benefit from some extra support then please talk to your child's classroom teacher to put in an expression of interest.

PTA
The PTA extends a warm welcome to all new whānau who have joined Winchester School this term. Some of you may not be aware exactly what a PTA is, or 'who' the PTA are, or 'what' the purpose of a PTA is, so I'll explain briefly below.
The PTA (Parents Teachers Association) is a group of parents and teachers who work collaboratively to enhance every child's learning experience at Winchester School. We support the school with ongoing fundraising for resources and activities, as well as fostering relationships within our school community. Some examples of previous events and fundraisers include the school disco, school lunches, eggs, Friday ice blocks, Whanāu welcome back BBQ, Lotteria night & raffle, Calendars, Hot Cross buns, Car Boot Sale and much more. The fundraisers enabled funds to be distributed back into the school for such things as the building of a new sandpit, classroom games, sports uniforms, school camps, shows and more!
As a parent of Winchester School you automatically become a member of the PTA, and are welcomed and encouraged to attend our meetings and events, volunteer your time, and offer suggestions/ideas to ensure our continual success. Your help, advice and input is very valuable.
To keep yourself up to date with all things PTA such as events, lunches, fundraisers etc, please request to join 'Winchester School PTA' on facebook. Joining this group does NOT commit you to volunteering your time, it is just a place to share information, however any offer of help, big or small, is always appreciated.
